Local Doctor Offers

Free School Physicals to Everyone

Lewisville, TX - A local medical office is offering free school physicals to the public on Saturday August 6th at their Lewisville office from 8 am to 3 pm. This 'Student Athlete Appreciation Day' was developed as a means to promote health screening and awareness for children and teens in the Lewisville and Carrollton communities in these tough economic times.

"One of the key health concerns for the student athlete is a heart condition called Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy (HCM). It is a congenital condition which results in an asymmetric enlargement of the left ventricle, the heart’s main pumping chamber. Under exercise conditions, the outflow tract of the left ventricle becomes blocked by the enlarged muscle, resulting in cardiovascular collapse and sudden death," says Dr. David Zahaluk, clinic director for Main Street Medical Care.

Risk factors for HCM include having a family member die suddenly during exercise and having a personal history of fainting during exercise. During a screening exam the condition is signaled by a heart murmur and it can be confirmed with an echocardiogram, an ultrasound study of the heart. Early identification of HCM is paramount, allowing appropriate use of medications and exercise restriction. The condition has very few warning signals and often presents with sudden death in an otherwise healthy athlete.

The school physical examination is about more than just HCM, however. It includes screening for scoliosis, eating disorders, lymphoma and host of other common, serious conditions.

Dr. Zahaluk will be conducting free school physicals at his Main Street Medical Care Family Practice and Urgent Care office in Lewisville, across from the Medical Center of Lewisville. These sports physicals are open to students of any age regardless of their school district. For more information about Main Street Medical Care, go to www.MainStreetMedicalCare.com or call (972) 221-3500 or send written correspondence to 571 West Main Street, Suite 120, Lewisville, TX 75057.
